Welcome Back, Mission Avenue Open Families!
It is truly an honor and privilege to be entering my 8th year as principal of Mission Avenue Open Elementary School. Each year brings new energy, fresh opportunities, and the joy of reconnecting with our incredible school community. I continue to be inspired daily by the commitment of our families, the curiosity of our students, and the passion of our exceptional staff.
At Mission, we are proud to have a team of highly qualified educators who are deeply dedicated to nurturing each child through rich, hands-on learning experiences aligned with the Open Philosophy. We value and celebrate the diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences that our families bring to our school—it is this diversity that strengthens our community and deepens the learning for all students.
As we look forward to the 2025–2026 school year, we are excited to share our Opening Unit of “Let’s Play On!” Students will begin the year learning academic and behavioral lessons tied to this theme. Our students will also get to attend meaningful field trips throughout the year, and we welcome back the spirit of parent volunteerism that makes our school so special. We truly believe that every parent has unique skills, talents, and perspectives that enrich our learning environment. Whether it’s spending time in the classroom, joining us on a field trip, or supporting school events, we encourage all families to find a way to get involved. Elementary students genuinely look forward to seeing their parents participate in their learning. Research continues to show that when families are actively engaged, students experience greater academic growth and stronger social-emotional development. Your presence matters more than you know.
Our returning families may recall receiving a letter last June 6, 2025 regarding modifications to our mornings including our plans to open our gates to all families starting at 8:30 am each day. This will allow ALL our families more time to connect, make new friends, and learn more about our school. We will have recreational aides available on the playground to ensure safety and supervision. Before and after school club information will be made available as soon as plans are in place.
Classroom supply lists are available on the Mission Avenue webpage. Please call the school at (916) 575-2362 if you have any questions. The school office will officially open on August 4 and will be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to assist families as we prepare for the upcoming school year.
We also have several important dates coming up as we get ready for the new school year!
- On August 8 at 8:00 a.m., teacher class lists will be available through each student’s Parent Portal account. We will also post a list in the MP room with students’ ID # only if you want to come by the school.
- Meet the Teacher for Grades 1-6 will take place on Tuesday, August 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - a great opportunity for students and families to visit our school and say hello before the first day.
- Meet the Teacher for TK/K will be held on Wednesday, August 13 from 8:30 - 9:30 am.
- First Day of School is Aug. 14 at 8:55 am. Parent Tea hosted by our PTA will be held in our MP room after the bell rings.
- PTA Family Breakfast will be Sunday, August 17, 2025 from 10 am - 12:30 pm on the playground.
- Fall Picture Day is scheduled for August 25.
- Back to School Night will be held on September 4.
